The majors

A page each on the tournaments that matter: the format, how players qualify, who has won it and how to watch.

World Darts Championship

The biggest event in darts, and the only one most people outside the sport can name. 128 players, three weeks at Alexandra Palace, a final on the first Sunday of January.

World Matchplay

Nine days at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, in a room with no air conditioning, in July. The players call it the toughest week of the year and they are not being polite about it.

Premier League Darts

Eight players, sixteen weeks, a different arena every Thursday night from February to May, then play-offs. The closest darts gets to a league season.

Grand Slam of Darts

The only major that starts with a group stage, so everybody who turns up gets at least three televised matches before anyone goes home.

World Grand Prix

The odd one out. You have to hit a double to open a leg as well as to close it, which turns the whole sport upside down for a week.

UK Open

The FA Cup of darts. An unseeded draw, made fresh after every round, so a qualifier from a Rileys club can be pulled out against the world number one.

European Championship

Thirty-two players, decided entirely on the European Tour Order of Merit rather than the world rankings. A different list, so a different field.

Players Championship Finals

The top 64 from a year of non-televised floor events, brought to Minehead for the last major before the World Championship.

World Masters

A short, sharp knockout for the top of the Order of Merit, played at Arena MK at the end of January.

World Series Finals

The end of the World Series, the run of two-day events held everywhere from Bahrain to Auckland across the year.
