How to calculate your darts average
Add up every point you scored across the leg or match, divide by the total number of darts you threw, then multiply by three. That gives you points per visit, which is what "3-dart average" means.
Worked example: you win a leg of 501 in 18 darts. That's 501 ÷ 18 = 27.8, then × 3 = 83.4. A quicker way to think about it: 501 ÷ 18 is your points-per-dart, and multiplying by 3 turns that into points-per-visit, which is the number everyone actually quotes.
What's a good 3-dart average?
| 3-dart average | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 40 | New to darts / casual pub player |
| 40 - 55 | Regular pub and league player |
| 55 - 70 | Strong county / Super League standard |
| 70 - 85 | Semi-professional, top amateur |
| 85 - 95 | Professional tour standard |
| 95+ | Elite - the very top of the PDC |
A 100+ average wins almost any professional match, and the televised record sits just above 123.
Common questions
What is first-9 average?
Your average over just the first three visits of a leg (nine darts), before checkouts come into play. It's a purer measure of scoring power since it strips out slower finishing darts. See the darts stats guide for more on first-9, checkout percentage and 180s.
Does a bust visit count toward my average?
No. A bust (going below zero, to exactly 1, or below zero after your finishing double) scores nothing for that visit, and most trackers, DartCounter included, don't count busted points toward your average.
Why is my average lower in matches than in practice?
Pressure, unfamiliar opponents and the mental load of tracking the leg all cost a few points off your practice average. It's normal, and it's one of the things CSWStats tracks automatically once you link DartCounter.
